Shaw Farms is now offering our “Adopt an Alpaca” program.

The “Adopt an Alpaca” program is a fantastic way to enable a loved one to experience and enjoy the alpaca lifestyle without all of the fuss and muss that it comes with.

When you “adopt” one of our alpacas, we will utilize the adoption fee to ensure your alpaca is well cared for, well fed, and lives in an environment that is safe, fun, and full of love.

The adoption fee of $100.00 will allow you to choose any of the alpacas from our herd to “adopt”.

Included with the “adoption”, which is valid for one year, are these exclusive benefits:

  • A framed 5x7 picture of your “adopted” alpaca (color or b&w, your choice)

  • A copy of your “adopted” alpacas ARI certificate, which includes information on them, their pedigree, date of birth, etc.

  • An exclusive tour of our alpaca farm

  • Monthly access to visit with your “adopted” alpaca (please see the FAQ section for instructions on how to arrange these sessions)

  • 15% discount on merchandise at our farm store or online farm store during the year-long “adoption” of your alpaca

  • Invitations to special events on the farm that are not made available to the general public (such as shearing day or herd health day)

This is an amazing gift and opportunity to share with anyone of any age.  The “Adopt an Alpaca” program will undoubtedly provide your loved ones with memories and experiences they will never forget.

FAQ’s

If I “adopt” and alpaca, does that mean I own it for the year?

Unfortunately, no. “Adopting” one of our alpacas does not provide you with ownership rights to the animal; instead we utilize the fee to ensure the alpaca is well cared for, well fed and lives in a loving environment.

Is it possible to take the alpaca off property to show friends and family?

No. You will be allowed to meet and interact with your alpaca, however, you cannot remove them from the farm.

How often can I visit my alpaca?

Our adoption program allows you weekend access to your alpaca, however, due to shows and other events in the alpaca’s life, there will be times that they will be unavailable to meet with you. That being said, we do guarantee at least one meeting/visit with your alpaca per month and can assure you that during the majority of the weekends throughout the year of your adoption, your alpaca will be available to you. We will do our best to keep you updated on which weekends they will not be available so that you can plan your visits accordingly. We absolutely encourage you visit as much as possible because the more experience the alpaca has with you, the more comfortable they will be.

How long can my visits be with my “adopted” alpaca?

Honestly, that all depends on your alpaca that day and how social he or she is feeling. We invite you to stay at the farm for as long as you like but generally the interaction time with your alpaca will range from anywhere between 30-60 minutes per visit.

What if something happens to my alpaca during my “adoption” year?

We love our animals as much as you do and we hate to think of something happening to one of them, however, we do understand that some things, including health issues, can be out of our hands at times. If an event like that were to occur, we will happily allow you to “adopt” another alpaca from our herd.

Can I bring friends to meet my “adopted” alpaca?

Absolutely! We encourage everyone to experience the alpaca lifestyle. Please keep in mind though that sometimes alpacas can be intimidated by large groups and may be less likely to be social and interact with you as a result.

How do I schedule time to see my “adopted” alpaca?

All visits are scheduled through the "Farm Tours" section of our website.

There are 2 options on this page, the "Alpaca Farm Tour" or the "Visit Your Adopted Alpaca", that are available to choose from; please utilize the "Visit Your Adopted Alpaca" option which will access our scheduler and provide you with a list of times and dates for tours. Then all you will need to do is fill out the information pop-up and you're all set! and contact you to arrange your first farm visit and alpaca encounter.

This advance notice allows us to ensure that your alpaca is available that weekend and that someone from the farm will be available to be with you while you spend time with your “adopted” alpaca.

How do I pick an alpaca to “adopt”?

Visit our “Alpaca Herd” page on our site and decide which one of our alpacas you would like to adopt. We have alpacas ranging in various age groups and while our crias (newly born) are a fan favorite because they are so cute and fluffy, they are very shy and often times reluctant to leave their mother’s side. If you would like to “adopt” a cria, we recommend choosing one that is over 6 months in age as they will be more accustomed to halter training and will be able to spend more time with them. Just remember, like people, alpacas have their own personalities, which means some are cautious and apprehensive around humans while others will come right up for a hug, cuddle, kiss or a treat.

How do I finalize the “adoption” process?

Once you determine which alpaca you want to adopt, please click the “Adopt an Alpaca Now” button which will whisk you to our online farm store and enable you to continue on with the adoption process. Select the “Adopt an Alpaca” option, select which alpaca you want to “adopt” and complete your transaction.

Once the transaction is completed, we will begin working on assembling all the goodies for your “adoption”. All of our tours are scheduled through the "Farm Tours" section of our website.
